I realized, the majority of games I own are made by Japanese developers.

I dunno, I just don't like Western-made ones, some just lean into "hell yeah realism" territory and the gameplay sometimes just fall flat on its face. Some are just too gritty and ugly looking to me. Before anyone says it, Dark Souls is Japanese made too. :)

(I actually do like Dark Souls and I do want to investigate its lore one day but my backlog is too huge right now)

Now Western made indie games are a different story, there's A Hat in Time, Celeste, the Undertale series that one funkin dancing game idk

I really do want to get into Western games more, but nothing ever clicks. I need to expand my horizons more but I can't if I got no interest in anything anymore lmao

also figure i should use this blog to actually post thoughts that i won't shut up about but know no one's going to hear

I think it has to do with the culture, its kinda like western comic books and japanese manga, western stuff is more grounded (in theory), while japanese stuff is usually more exaggerated (in theory), also japanese stuff usually has more variety since they usually just do whatever concept they come up with in the spot (allegedly).

Sounds about right. You can have the most bonkers plot and it'll still be enjoyable. I like it crazy then formulaic what most western works do. *cough most Hollywood flims and adult cartoons cough*

Whenever something seems like a hit, the more likely everyone would just try to copy whatever worked last time. And the cycle just repeats itself.

I like both
stoked about playing Tales of Arise soon
but God of War (2018) is still absolutely amazing

Tales series always got the best stories around.
I don't know too much about God of War, but I can see its taking advantage of PS5's improved hardware.

@Scanline5 @solitonmedic You literally just described the superhero comic industry.

Well, damn.
I don't even read comics, but that's still concerning.
I don't think it just applies to them, but it seems this problem is just everywhere. Innovation must be scary.

Yeah you're definitely right. All of what you mentioned I've noticed too, mainly with American writers. However, i think it's the just modern day America that's less creative and original, because the most entertaining book I ever read was written in the 1970s. I am not joking when I say no other writer that I've ever read from is even close to that writer's mastery.

When it comes to games, I think American games were really original in the beginning but then they basically created this silly demand for war like shooter games and emphasized graphics and action over gameplay. Because of this I think most PlayStation and Xbox games are incredibly boring and simple minded, including God of war, and for the most part will only play Nintendo. I wouldn't want to play games like Call of Duty. To me, the gameplay seems as simple as Agario, the circle eats a circle game.

There are some good American games, but very few.
